M. Margaret Jameson was born in South Carolina on September 8, 1920. She was educated at Winthrop College and Syracuse University. She held positions at Vanderbilt University, Texas Western College, the University of Maryland, and Mississippi State College for Women before becoming Dean of Women at Louisiana State University in 1966.
